How to Install a Proxy Server

A proxy server is a server entered into the configuration settings of your Web browser to enable anonymous browsing or, depending on your proxy server's setup, filtered browsing. It's often used when the client and the server are incompatible for direct connection. There are many proxy servers listed on the Internet, but if you'd like, you can set up your own on an extra computer. You can connect to this proxy server on your own home network or any other place you have an Internet connection.

Install the free CC Proxy software, available for Windows PCs running Windows 98, ME, NT, 2000, 2003, XP and Vista. CC Proxy is available to download as a self-executing installation file, and the free version allows three simultaneous users to connect.

Use Qbik's WinGate Proxy Server software if you're looking for an alternative to WinProxy. WinGate is available for Windows 2000, XP, Vista and 2008 Server Edition. You'll receive a 30-day trial to preview the software; after that, you'll have to pay for a license dependent on how many users will be connecting to your proxy server.

Build your own proxy server using the Google App Engine. This option is completely free and can be set up by users without any technical skills. All you'll have to do is set up a Google App Engine account and paste some code into the App Engine.
