How to Ping a DSL Box to Use Wireless Internet
Pinging a DSL modem, or box, is a great way to understand whether your DSL wireless Internet connection is working properly. Based on the results of pinging the DSL box, you can choose which steps to take to troubleshoot a faulty or slow DSL connection. Use the command prompt (pre-installed on your computer) to ping a DSL box or any other networking device.

Click on the Start menu and select "Run...."

Type "cmd" without the quotes and press the "Enter" key. This will launch your command prompt on a black screen.

Type "ipconfig" without the quotes and and hit "Enter." This will display a series of numbers about your local area connection. Locate the entry that is listed under "Default Gateway." Write the number listed next to it on a piece of paper. It should be in the following format: XXX.XXX.X.X This is the IP address of your DSL modem.

Ping your DSL box. Type "ping" without the quotes followed by a single space and then the IP address that you wrote down in the previous step. Press "Enter." It should be in the following format: ping XXX.XXX.X.X
