How to Apply for Disability in Vermont

If you have a disability that prevents you from working, you may be eligible for Social Security Disability Insurance. Social Security Disability Insurance pays those people who have worked in jobs covered by Social Security benefits, which includes most jobs in the United States, a reduced income if they have been injured, or otherwise disabled, and cannot return to work for more than a year. If you want to apply for disability in Vermont, you do so in the same manner that you apply for disability in other states, through the federal Social Security office.

Instructions

  1. Online

    • 1

Access the online disability system on the Social Security website. The system allows you to complete most of the application process online.

    • 2

Click on the link to open the "Adult Disability Checklist" provided on the first page of the disability system and print the screen. The checklist includes all of the items that you need to complete the online application process. Once you have the list printed, gather all of the information needed before beginning the application process.

    • 3

Click the "Online Disability Benefit Application" link to be taken to the first screen of the online application. Choose the "I am applying for myself" option or one of the two options that indicate that you are applying for another person, check the "I have Read the Privacy Act Statement" and click "Apply for Benefits" to continue to the application.

    • 4

Fill out all of the sections of the Disability Benefit Application. When finished, click "Save" and submit the application.

    • 5

Return to the first page of the online disability system from which you clicked the "Online Disability Benefit Application" link. Click the "Adult Disability Report" link. Check the "I have Read the Privacy Act Statement" and click "Start Report."

    • 6

Fill in all of the information required in the Adult Disability Report. It is in this section that you fill out your medical and work history. When finished, click "Submit."

    • 7

Go back to the first page of the disability system one last time. Click the "Authorization to Disclose Information..." link and print the authorization form. Fill out the authorization form, sign the form and mail to or drop the form off at your local social security office, which can be found using the Local Office Search tool on the Social Security website.
