Curl Hair with Velcro Curlers

Using Velcro curlers can be a great way to add volume and bounce to your hair. Unlike traditional rod curlers, which can slide off the hair and require lots of pins to keep in place, Velcro rollers can hold their own. Velcro curlers are also a great alternative to a "wet set," since they work best on dry hair. With a set of Velcro rollers and a little heat, you'll be ready to go in no time. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Grab a section of hair from on top of your head. Start behind your bangs if you have them, or closer to the hairline if your hair is all one length. Hold the section of hair near the ends and pull it directly upward until it extends to its full length.

    • 2

Use your curling iron to curl the section of hair horizontally towards the scalp. Curl hair under around the barrel of the curling iron; this will curl away from the face. Hold the curl for 10 to 15 seconds before releasing.

    • 3

Grab a curler and roll your section of hair towards the scalp again. Try to do this quickly after releasing hair from the curling iron, as the heat helps lock in the curl. Secure the curler with a salon clip if the Velcro doesn't feel like it's holding snugly. Finish with a light spritz of hairspray.

    • 4

Repeat the same curling process in sections of hair directly behind the one you just curled. Using large rollers for maximum volume, you should only need two to four curlers to curl the hair from the top of the head back to the crown.

    • 5

Use smaller Velcro curlers on the sides of the head. Curl hair away from the face again, but this time wrap the hair vertically instead of horizontally. Wrap another three to four curlers each on either side of the head, going towards the back of the head.

    • 6

Curl any remaining sections of hair on the back of the head. Roll horizontally or vertically, depending on whether you want volume or curls in these areas.

    • 7

Spritz all curlers again with a light mist of hairspray. Allow curls to set for at least 15 minutes before removing them.

    • 8

Unwrap curls carefully when it's time to take out the rollers. Use your fingers to style and arrange your hair without undoing the curls. Finish the look with more hairspray when you've achieved your desired style.

Tips & Warnings

  • The size of the curler dictates the size of the curl. Big rollers are best for adding body and volume, and smaller rollers will produce tighter curls. Experiment with curlers of different sizes to customize your look.

  • For extra lift, apply a volumizing product before curling the sections of hair near your crown.

  • If you'd rather not use a curling iron, a hair dryer or bonnet dryer also works great with Velcro rollers.

  • The longer you keep your curlers in, the tighter your curls will be.

  • Never use Velcro rollers on hair that's completely wet. Your hair will stick to the curlers, making it really difficult to remove them.

  • Avoid using Velcro rollers on hair that's weak, dry or coarse. These types of hair are more likely to break or become stuck on the curlers.

  • Don't pull while unrolling your hair from the curlers, as this can cause breakage.

  • Don't press and push on the hair as you wrap it in Velcro curlers; getting it stuck will make it harder to unroll.
