How to Apply for British Visas

The British visa process can be a lengthy one, so start well in advance of your planned trip.

Unless you are from one of the countries not requiring a visa for a short visit, Americans and foreign nationals in the US must apply for a general visitor visa to enter the United Kingdom for six months. (This is not the same as a standard 90-day tourist visa, student, or work visa). British Consulates General in Chicago, New York, and Los Angeles use the UK Border Agency online application service, which will help you determine which requirements apply to you.

Instructions

1. Go to the UK Border Agency homepage and access the "New Visa Application -- Before you apply" page.

2. Open the Application Security dialogue box to enter your email address, create a password, and pay the application fee (MasterCard and Visa are accepted). As of June 2010, the fee for a short-term visit visa was US $102 for all foreign nationals seeking a short-term single or multiple entry visa for up to six months.

3. Submit the completed online application and then select an appointment date to have your biometric data collected at your nearest application support center.

4. Print copies of your application, confirmation of payment, and proof of your biometric appointment, making sure you choose the "return mail" option if you do not plan to use a courier or travel agent.

5. Go to your nearest application support center, as shown on the biometric appointment page, and have your data collected. Make sure you take your passport and appointment confirmation with you.

6. Mail printed copies of your completed online application and supporting documents via certified mail to the specific Consulate General displayed on your application. This information varies depending on your mailing address. You must mail your application materials within two weeks after the collection of your biometric data.

   Other supporting documents include proof that you do not intend to immigrate to Britain illegally, You must also provide bank statements confirming that you have sufficient financial resources to cover your trip.
