Replacing the Hinge on a Mac iBook

Replacing the hinge on your computer.

The iBook is an older model Apple laptop that has since been discontinued and replaced by the Macbook. On the Macbook, a single hinge connects the screen to the body of the computer. On the iBook, two hinges connect the screen; this design feature is common to many other computers. If one of these hinges becomes damaged, you should address the problem immediately. You can replace an iBook hinge yourself.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off your iBook G4 and remove the power cable from the side of the unit. Make sure the screen is in its open position.

    • 2

Use the tip of your screwdriver to remove the two small screws on either side of the bottom of the LCD screen.

    • 3

Use your fingers to pry the bezel (plastic frame around the LCD screen) away from the screen by the seams.

    • 4

Remove all screws from the sides of the metal frame housing the LCD screen. Remove the electrical tape from the back of the screen to expose the orange LCD cables.

    • 5

Pull the LCD screen gently away from the frame and unplug the cables from the back of the screen.

    • 6

Unplug the screen wires connected to the rectangular inverter board located just under the screen. Remove the screen completely. The hinge assembly will now be exposed underneath where the screen used to sit.

    • 7

Use your screwdriver to remove all screws on the hinge assembly and then remove it. Replace with a new assembly (available from your Apple retailer or online) and then reassemble your iBook in the reverse order you took it apart.
