How to Make Miniature Dog Sleds

How to Make Miniature Dog Sleds thumbnail
Build a miniature dog sled with common household items.

Idyllic winter imagery often includes a team of dogs pulling a sled across a snow-covered trail. Create a miniature version to enjoy in your home. Popsicle sticks are the ideal choice for craft projects because they are easy to snip with scissors. This project can be completed in less than an hour and can be painted with your favorite acrylic paints.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Place two Popsicle sticks parallel to each other on a flat surface. These will form your sled runners. Cut a third Popsicle stick in half and glue each half at the ends to the two parallel sticks to make a rectangle.

    • 2

Glue four more Popsicle sticks inside and parallel to the two long sticks from Step 1. This will make your sled bed.

    • 3

Cut four Popsicle sticks in half to make 8 shorts sticks. Lay two short sticks down on a flat surface, parallel to each other. This will be the ends of the backrest, which will need to be as wide as the bed but half of the length. Glue the tops and bottoms of five short sticks onto the two parallel sticks to complete the backrest (it should end up square-shaped). Let the backrest dry.

    • 4

Glue the bottom of the backrest perpendicular to the sled base at one end.

    • 5

Glue one Popsicle stick along the length of one of the runners from a top corner of the backrest to the front end of the sled base to make a downward sloping crossbar (similar in appearance to a handrail) on one side of the sled.

    • 6

Repeat Step 5 on the opposite side to make a second crossbar.

    • 7

Cut a Popsicle stick lengthwise into four thin sticks to make rails for the side of the sled. Glue the rails evenly spaced and vertically on one side of the sled. Trim so that the rails don't poke above the diagonal bar. Repeat for the other side of the sled.

    • 8

Cut the pipe cleaner in half. Glue one end at the top of the backrest to make a handlebar and then glue the other half of the pipe cleaner to the front of the base to make the brushbow (the rounded end of the sled).
