How to Make a Pompom Template
Yarn pompoms can embellish a variety of craft items, including the tops of knitted hats, the ends of a sweater tie, or even tiny pompoms lining the edge of a blanket. When you are almost done with your crafting project and you wish to add colorful yarn pompoms as a finishing touch, you must first make a pompom template. The size of your template depends on how large you want your finished pompom.
Things You'll Need
- Ruler
- Thin cardboard
- Geometry compass or object to trace around
- Pencil
- Scissors

1
Whatever the size pompom you need, add 1 inch to this to determine the diameter you must make your pompom template. For example, if you want a large pompom with a 3-inch diameter, make your pompom template 4 inches in diameter.

2
Find an round object to trace around with roughly this same diameter or use a geometry compass set to create a circle with that diameter. Trace or draw two identical circles onto the thin cardboard in the size you require for your pompom template.

3
Cut out the two circles with the scissors.
-
4
Draw a half-inch-wide circle in the center of each circle with the pencil and cut these circles out to finish making your pompom template.

Tips & Warnings
These templates allow you to wind yarn around the circle, much like a donut, and then cut the yarn apart by placing your scissors between the two templates. Leave a tail of yarn out of the center hole to secure the end of your pompom.
