Homemade Cowgirl & Indian Costumes
Assemble homemade cowgirl and Indian costumes with clothing purchased from thrift stores or use old clothes from your own closet. Once you have the base of the costume completed, add decorations and embellishments with beads, iron-on patches or fabric paints. Instructions
-
-
1
Purchase a denim skirt with belt loops, cowboy boots and a Western-style shirt at a thrift store to form the base of your cowgirl costume.
-
2
Cut an oval measuring approximately 6-inches wide and 3-inches tall from a piece of cardboard with a craft knife. Cut two narrow vertical slits on each side of the oval. Do not extend the slits past the top or bottom edge of the oval.

-
3
Paint the cardboard oval with gold or silver spray paint to create a faux belt buckle. Attach rhinestones or colored beads to the dry belt buckle with craft glue, if desired.
-
4
Roll a large scarf or bandanna into a tube long enough to wrap around your waist. Thread the scarf through the slits on the cardboard belt buckle. Or opt to thread a belt through the slits and buckle the belt at the back or side of the skirt with the cardboard belt buckle at the front of your costume.

5
Paint an inexpensive straw cowboy hat with craft paint and a foam paintbrush to match your cowgirl costume.
Indian Costume
-
6
Choose brown or tan clothing to form the base of the costume. Sweats are a good choice for children, while adults may prefer slacks and a long-sleeve T-shirt or a dress.
-
7
Cut several long strips of fabric approximately 3- to 5-inches wide. Cut vertical slits into the bottom of the strips of fabric at 1/2-inch intervals to create fringe.
-
8
Sew the fringe onto your costume at the bottom hem of your shirt and around the openings of your sleeves. Add fringe running vertically up the outside of each pant leg, if desired.
-
9
Cut a strip of fabric large enough to wear as a headband with the ends of the fabric tied in a knot behind your head. Sew beads onto the headband or decorate it with fabric paints.
-
10
Wear moccasins or leather sandals to complete your Indian costume.

Tips & Warnings
Easily convert the cowgirl costume into a sexy, adult look by choosing a denim miniskirt and tying the Western-style shirt in a knot to expose your midriff.
Transform a clean, dry cotton mop into a horse for your cowgirl or Indian costume. Draw a horse head onto a piece of cardboard and draw the horse's face with markers. Cut out the head and attach it to the mop with packing or duct tape so that the mop head forms the horse's mane.
