How to Build a Window Valance Box

How to Build a Window Valance Box thumbnail
Dress up a window with a valance box.

Valance window treatments include the window valance box. Among the easiest projects to build, a window valance box transforms ordinary-looking wood into a designer creation. Constructed from plywood, a window valance box is light, making it easier to install than its solid-wood counterpart. Add some galley rail to the top of the valance box and transform it into a shelf for displaying your favorite collectibles.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the two pieces of 72-by-12-inch plywood on a worktable. Measure from one end and make a mark at 3/8 inch. Put the framing square on the marks. Draw a line across the 12-inch width of the plywood. This is the front of the window valance box.

    • 2

Drill two pilot holes on the lines about 1 inch from the top and bottom of the front of the valance box, using a 1/16-inch drill bit. Apply glue to one edge of each piece of 12-by-12-inch plywood (the side pieces).

    • 3

Put the sides behind the valance box front at the ends of the front. Secure the pieces with the 1 1/4-inch drywall screws. Clean up excess glue immediately with a damp cloth.

    • 4

Set the piece of 72-by-12-inch plywood (the valance box top) on the worktable. Drill pilot holes every 6 inches down the sides and the long edge of the plywood. Keep the pilot holes within 3/8 inch of the edges.

    • 5

Apply glue to the top edges of the sides and front of the window valance box. Set the box top on the valance box. Secure it with the 1 1/4-inch drywall screws. Clean up excess glue immediately with a damp cloth.
