How to Apply for UK Citizenship in USA

How to Apply for UK Citizenship in USA thumbnail
British citizenship is passed down by descent.

The only available route for a person desiring to become a United Kingdom citizen while physically remaining in the United States is through natural descent. All other forms of U.K. citizenship and naturalization require time spent in Britain or being citizen of a British overseas territory. Make sure you fulfill the requirements before applying for British citizenship from the United States.

Instructions

    • 1

Verify with your parents that they have British citizenship. Citizenship by descent is only available to be passed down one generation. If either of your parents were born in Great Britain, you are already a British citizen, even if you were born outside of the United Kingdom.

    • 2

Register children by descent as British nationals using form MN1, available on the United Kingdom's Border Agency website. Print the application out and complete it. As of 2010, the application is 16 pages long. Be sure to read all of the application requirements and determine your family's precise personal situation. Review details of both parents' citizenship, amount of time spent away from the U.K. and amount of time living in the U.K. to make sure accuracy is employed while filling out the application.

    • 3

Submit the application before the child's eighteenth birthday. Children must be of good character, without a criminal record, if over the age of ten.

Tips & Warnings

  • Persons over the age of 18 who are children of British citizens, but living in the U.S. are British citizens already. Apply for your passport of national ID card instead of citizenship in this case.
