How Do I Become a Driving Instructor in Michigan?
A certified driving instructor in Michigan works with the public to impart skills, knowledge, and expertise in navigating the highways safely. Skills taught include operation of a motor vehicle, the basic mechanical features and maintenance of a motor vehicle and safe driving techniques. The state of Michigan requires a driving instructor to possess a high school diploma and a clean driving record. Instructors must also complete a college level driving instructor program, pass a background check, pass a written exam and have previous experience working as an instructor.

Enroll in and complete an educational program in driving instruction. In order to enroll, applicants must be 21 years of age, have a clean driving record and pass a medical exam and a background check. Once enrolled, candidates must complete eight semester hours of driver instructor education to qualify for certification. There are three schools in Michigan that are sanctioned by the state to offer driver instruction educational programs.

Apply to the secretary of state for a driver instructor certificate upon completion of the required eight semester hours of education. The fee for the application process is $225 payable to the secretary of state, as of June 2010. To complete the application process, you must submit to a background check, provide transcripts showing completion of the required educational program, submit to a medical examination and show proof of a valid driver license. To begin the application process, candidates should download the required application pack, complete the packet by following all instructions and return it to the address listed on the application.

Display the driving instructor certificate, once issued, in view of students at all times while giving instruction. The certificate serves to identify an instructor's qualification.

Submit to regular background checks every five years once you are certified. These checks ensure that instructors present no danger to the public.

Tips & Warnings
If an instructor is not a resident of Michigan, he or she must submit to the state a certified update of all driving records every 60 days. Failure to do so may result in revocation of the instructor certificate.
More than six traffic violation points in the last two years or a DUI conviction will result in denial or revocation of a driver instructor certificate. Other disqualifications include reckless driving convictions, driving with an open container of alcohol and three or more license suspensions within two years.
