How to Repaint Gene Dolls

How to Repaint Gene Dolls thumbnail
You can replace the face makeup on your Gene doll or any other vinyl doll.

Doll repainting and other types of customization have become highly popular in some corners of the doll collecting hobby, such as the Gene Marshall fashion doll fan base. People do repaints for a few different reasons, such as repair to a damaged doll or creating a unique look for a commonly seen doll. Changing a doll's painted makeup often does not adversely affect the market value of a doll; in fact, the doll's value can increase with a skilled repaint by a respected artist.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay out your Gene fashion doll on a table or desk. Pull the doll's hair back with an elastic band or other hair accessory, so that it does not touch the face. If you are worried about accidentally ruining the hair, cover it with plastic wrap.

    • 2

Clean the original makeup off the Gene doll's face. Apply acetone to a cotton ball and gently rub the cotton ball over the doll's features until most of the makeup disappears. Soak a cotton swab in the acetone and use it to remove makeup from any small or stubborn details.

    • 3

Make a solution of baking soda and water, then soak another cotton ball in the solution. Rub the cotton ball over the doll's face to clean away the acetone, which will eat away at the vinyl if left alone. Dry the face with a clean cotton ball.

    • 4

Draw guidelines for the doll's features onto the face with a pencil. Map out where you would like to put the eyebrows and eyeliner.

    • 5

Apply your acrylic paint to a small paintbrush and begin painting the makeup onto the face. Add eyebrows, eyeliner, eyeshadow, lipstick, blush and any other facial details like freckles or beauty marks.

    • 6

Seal your work with a clear varnish and let it dry completely.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you cannot find a brush small enough for your work, you can trim the hairs on a larger paintbrush down to size.
