Bake the cake layers. Using packaged cake mixes or your own favorite recipe, mix required ingredients and place the batter in your chosen oven pans. Bake the cakes, removing them from the pans when finished and letting them completely cool before stacking or decorating.

Ice each layer with a preliminary crumb coat, a thin layer of frosting to help each layer hold its own shape. If desired, spread rolled-out fondant over each layer to create a smooth surface. Use a circular piece of fondant to cover a round cake, centering the cake and fondant piece while pressing the fondant down and around the sides.

Insert three to three wooden or plastic dowels vertically into each cake layer, cutting the dowels to equal the height of each layer. This will reinforce the cake and help prevent the layers from caving in on themselves. Stack the cake onto your final serving plate, starting with the bottom layer and moving to the top.

Use your piping bags and tips to embellish the cake as desired, adding flowers, dots, swirls, stripes or any other pattern you choose to integrate. Position your cake topper using frosting as the adhesive.

Tips & Warnings
If you do intend to make your own wedding cake or one for a friend, consider performing a test run to help you practice your baking and piping skills. Even if you do not make a full cake beforehand, you will likely benefit from undergoing a small-scale practice drill.
Do not bake the actual wedding cake until the day before the reception to preserve the appearance and taste of the final product.
