How to Make Shredded Fabric Brooches

How to Make Shredded Fabric Brooches thumbnail
Use fabric scraps to make a raggedy brooch.

Scraps of fabrics leftover from previous craft projects seem to multiply when you aren't looking. These saved scraps are usually too big to throw away without feeling guilty or too small to be usable in a current craft project. Dig through your stash of scraps and make shredded fabric brooches. The finished brooches can be given out at parties as inexpensive party favors, or you can provide your party guests with the supplies to make their own.

Things You'll Need

  • Cotton fabric scraps, 45 inches wide
  • Scissors
  • Measuring tape
  • Felt scrap
  • Compass
  • Craft glue
  • Decorative button

Instructions

    • 1

Rip three, 1/4-inch wide strips of scrap 45-inch wide cotton fabric. These shredded strips can be from the same fabric or a variety. Cut 4-inch lengths from each strip and set aside.

    • 2

Wrap one shredded strip around four fingers on your hand. Slip the wrapped strip off of your fingers and pinch the center together. Wrap a 4-inch fabric strip around the pinched center and tie in a knot. Repeat with the remaining shredded fabric strips.

    • 3

Trace a 1 1/2-inch circle on a scrap of felt using a compass. Cut out the circle.

    • 4

Lay the felt circle on your work surface. Apply a dot of craft glue to the knot on one wrapped fabric strip. Center the knot on the felt circle with the looped ends of the wrapped strip positioned straight up and down. Apply glue to the knots of the remaining two wrapped strips. Position the wrapped strips over the first strip in an "X" shape. The ends of the loops will be evenly spaced in a round flower shape.

    • 5

Glue a decorative button to the center of the stacked fabric strips to decorate the brooch. Allow the glue to dry.

    • 6

Separate the individual loops of each wrapped strip to create a fluffy flower. Turn the brooch over. Lift the edges of the felt circle and apply craft glue between the circle and the shredded fabric. Press the felt down firmly on the fabric brooch.

    • 7

Apply craft glue to the back of a 1 1/2-inch pin back. Place the pin horizontally on the felt circle, just above the center of the circle. Allow the glue to dry.
