If you spot a mouse in your home, it is imperative that you get rid of it. Mice leave unsanitary droppings, gnaw on wire, paper and wood and can have an odor. A female mouse can have as many as 60 babies in a year's time, according to the University of California website. Using a mousetrap is the best and most humane way of getting rid of a mouse. If you use glue boards, you will have to kill the mouse yourself, and with poison the mouse may crawl into a hole in your home and die, leaving a foul odor for quite a while.       Set your traps in the area where you spotted evidence of a mouse, such as damaged wood, shredded paper or droppings.

      Place the traps approximately six to 10 feet apart along walls, behind objects and in secluded areas. Mice typically travel only short distances, according to the Do Your Own Pest Control website.

      Bait the trap with peanut butter, cheese or chocolate.

      Check your traps daily to see whether they caught the mouse. If not, put fresh bait out every few days.

      Wear disposable plastic gloves and put the mouse and the trap into a plastic garbage bag. Tie it in a knot and then put it in another garbage bag along with the disposable gloves. Place it in a trash barrel outdoors with a snug fitting lid. Wash your hands thoroughly.
