How Do I Level a Small Piece of Ground for a Pool? thumbnail
Above-ground pools need to be set on level ground.

Putting a pool on uneven ground can result in the entire pool toppling over, injuries or a pool that is always slightly lopsided. Leveling the ground is important before installing a pool, especially when the pool is an above-ground swimming pool. Leveling the ground will take time and should be done all at the same time to avoid problems, so it is important to have the time available. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the land and mark off the ends. The land needs to be completely level for the entire are of the pool plus a few feet extra beyond the pool to avoid having sudden drop offs that can present a safety hazard. Use a measuring tape and some small sticks to mark the area that should be leveled.

    • 2

Remove all grass and a thin layer of sod. Many unlevel grounds are the result of uneven grass, so removing the grass will improve the condition of the ground.

    • 3

Place the 2 by 4 on the ground and then place a level on top of the 2 by 4. This will show how much leveling needs to be done. This is especially important on land that appears flat to be sure that the land is level.

    • 4

Fill in the land with compacted sand. Compacted sand is wet and patted down as tightly as possible so that it will not easily move. It should be compacted a minimum of 2 times to be sure that the sand will not move.

    • 5

Check the land with the 2 by 4 and level. If it is not yet level, add more damp sand and compact it until the land is perfectly level. Make sure the entire measured area is covered so that there are no drop offs on any sides.

    • 6

Place the plywood on top of the sand and check that it is level once more. The plywood ensures that the weight of the pool is evenly distributed and prevent the pool from being leaning or sloping as a result of the supports digging unevenly into the sand. More plywood can be added as needed to keep it level throughout the season. Make sure the plywood does not touch the pool lining.
