The Whirlpool stove top is one of the first things your guests see when they look at your kitchen. Accidents happen if you work around your stove long enough. Chips and deep scratches can destroy the appearance of your stove. You can replace the stove top and renew the look of your stove. You can remove your Whirlpool stove top with a single hand tool and prepare your stove for a new top and a refreshing look.

  1. Unplug the Whirlpool stove power cord from the wall outlet.

  2. Lift the heating coil elements and pull them out of the stove top. The heating elements connect to a connector block directly under the stove top. When you lift, pull the element straight out to disconnect from the connector block. Lift the drip pans out of the heating element locations.

  3. Remove the single screw on each connector block that secures the block to the edge of the element hole with a Phillips-head screwdriver.

  4. Lift the front of the stove top and locate the support rods on each side. The supports connect to the inside of the side panels and the bottom of the stove top. Unhook the support rods from the side panels by sliding the rods out of the support brackets.

  5. Slide the stove top to the left to release the right hinge pin from the bracket on the rear of the stove top. Pull the stove top forward 1 foot so that you can access the back of the stove top.

  6. Locate the green ground wire on the back of the stove top. Remove the screw that secures the ground wire to the stove top with a Phillips-head screwdriver. Directly beside the ground wire, there is a strap containing other stove wires connecting to the stove top. Remove the screw that secures the strap to the stove top.

  7. Pull the stove top off of the Whirlpool stove. Remove the hinge pins on the back of the stove top to install on the new stove top. The hinge pins are on each rear corner and secure to the stove top with a Phillips-head screw.

  8. Tip

Flat glass-surface stove tops will require screw removal on the front inside lip of the stove top. Open the oven door to access the securing screws and remove the screws with a Phillips-head screwdriver.

    Warning

Always disconnect power from appliances before attempting repairs.
