Popular with tweens and teens for years, the thin plastic bottle cap inserts found on Coke bottles can be made into ingenious, lightweight bracelets, resembling the jelly bracelets trendy in the '80s. So break out the pop and start your "jewelry" making.

Things You'll Need

  • Soda bottle cap
  • Screwdriver
  • Scissors
  • Watercolor markers
  • Color wheel (optional)

Remove the transparent, light blue plastic from the inside of the Coke bottle cap using your fingernail or small screwdriver. Poke a hole through the center of it using a scissor. Push out the center of the plastic sheet until there is a hole large enough to fit your finger through.

Pull out the center piece until it detaches from the outer ring. This plastic will cause the ring to stretch poorly. Discard the excess plastic from the center of the ring.

Hold the ring carefully and begin gently stretching it outward. Be forewarned that these bracelets break easily.

Rotate the ring after each stretch so that each section gets pulled equally and doesn’t snap. Keep pulling carefully until the ring becomes large enough to slip over your hand. When it is large enough to fit without being too tight, stop stretching the plastic.

Paint the bracelet using watercolor markers. Let the color set on the plastic for a while, and then wipe off the excess. The porous plastic will soak up some of the color. The initial color is light blue, so if you use yellow, the resulting shade will be light green. If you use red, purple will be the result. Use a color wheel if you want to figure out which shades to combine.

Tips & Warnings

  • Be careful with the screwdriver if using one. It could slip from the edge of the cap and cut your finger.
  • Also be aware of where your fingers are when punching out the center of the plastic ring with scissors.
