New Jersey 1040EZ Instructionsthumbnail
Some New Jersey residents can file a Form 1040EZ.

Residents of New Jersey whose income is more than the standard deduction they are eligible to take on their federal tax returns are required to file a federal income tax return with the Internal Revenue Service by April 15 each year. New Jersey residents can file a simpler version of Form 1040--the 1040EZ--if their income is less than $100,000 filed singly or married filing jointly, are 64 years of age or younger and have no dependents.

    • Form 1040EZ Instructions
      • 1

Enter your personal information on the first section of Form 1040EZ. Your name, spouse's name if applicable, address and Social Security number are required information in this section.

      • 2

Enter income information in the section following your personal information. Input any income, taxable interest and/or unemployment compensation on lines one through three, and enter the total of all three onto line four for your adjusted gross income. For example, on line five, enter $9,350 if you are filing single or $18,700 if you are married filing jointly. If the amount on line five is more than the amount on line four, enter zero onto line six. Otherwise, subtract the amount on line five from the amount on line four and enter the total on line six, which is your taxable income.

      • 3

Enter all income tax withholding on line seven. This information is found on forms W-2 and/or 1099. If applicable, enter your "Making Work Pay" credit and earned income credits on lines eight and nine. Additional forms are required to find out if you can take these credits, and they are included in the instruction manual for Form 1040EZ. Add lines seven through nine to obtain your total payments and credits, and enter that amount on line 10.

      • 4

Refer to pages 27 through 35 of the "Form 1040EZ Instructions" and using the amount on line six, locate your total tax. Enter the total on line 11. If the amount on line 10 is more than line 11, subtract line 11 from line 10 and enter that amount on line 12. This is your refund amount. If the total on line 11 is more than on line 10, subtract 10 from 11 and enter the amount on line 13. This is the amount you owe the Internal Revenue Service.

      • 5

Enter your banking information on lines 12b, 12c and 12d if you are receiving a federal income tax refund. The IRS will use this information to directly deposit your refund into your bank account, which means you'll receive your refund faster than having a paper check mailed to you.

Sign and date the bottom of Form 1040EZ and attach Copy B of your W-2s and/or 1099s to the front of Form 1040EZ. New Jersey residents should mail their Form 1040EZ Individual Income Tax Returns with a payment to:

        Department of Treasury
        Internal Revenue Service Center
        Kansas City, MO 64999-0114

New Jersey residents expecting a refund should mail their return to the same address.
