How to Troubleshoot a Car Radio CD Player

How to Troubleshoot a Car Radio CD Player thumbnail
Problems with car radio CD players are usually due to problems with the actual CD.

The iPod or MP3 music player, with its solid-state circuitry, is actually the best solution to in-car audio that has come along. However, many people still use CDs in their car radios. Problems with car radio CD players are usually due to problems with the actual CD. Because CDs are a physical medium, and the car can become a hot, dusty and unforgiving environment, CDs can deteriorate rapidly. Configuration can be another problem.

Instructions

    • 1

Wipe the CDs with a soft cloth. Clean from the center outward. Inspect the CD for scratches---CDs are by no means indestructible---that can cause skips. You should replace the CD if it skips and you can see visible scratches.

    • 2

Insert a commercial CD player cleaning disc into the slot. Cars can get dusty, and the dust will permeate the CD slot, even with the flap in place.

    • 3

Check the documentation that came with the CD player to verify that the CD will play in your particular car radio CD player. Commercially purchased CDs shouldn't be a problem, but if you are burning your own CDs at home, it's possible that the format in which you are burning is not compatible with the CD player.

    • 4

Look for a "Music File/Audio Disc," "CD Read" or similarly labeled switch within the CD player's menu functions. You may have to configure the CD player to play music files rather than commercial discs. Playing MP3 or WAV files, for example, may require configuration.

    • 5

Insert the number of CDs that the CD changer can hold. For example, a six-disc changer can only hold up to six discs. Trying to insert any more will cause failure.
