How to Do Retro Hair

The latest hairstyles may be novelties to young people, but many of the "new" styles are re-runs of classics. For example, the bobbed styles popular a few years ago were a throwback to the bobbed hair women wore in the Roaring Twenties. Not all retro hairstyles will make a come back, but many are great for period plays, costume parties or just to complete that rockabilly look. Fashionable or not, retro hairstyles require some effort and attention to what you're doing. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

  1. Victory Curls

    • 1

Try this popular WWII vintage hairstyle that takes its name from a fighter-plane maneuver. Comb your hair so that it is exactly straight and tangle free. Make a center part. Grab a section of hair on the left side of your part. This section of hair must go from the top of your head to behind your ears.

    • 2

Comb out this section so that it's smooth and straight. Hold this section in your left hand, combing it back with your other hand so that the section of hair extends towards the back of your head. In this case, your left hand is functioning as a human pony-tail holder, with a "tail" of hair extending past your hand to the back of your head.

    • 3

Continue to hold this section of hair in your left hand, but position your left hand so that your left thumb is on the under side of the portion of hair. Wrap the "tail" of hair around your thumb. Once you wrap it, you'll still have a tail of hair sticking out from under the thumb. Pull on this tail to tighten the coil around the thumb.

    • 4

Pin the underside of the coil of hair to the hair against your scalp. Slide out your thumb from this coil. Add more pins. Spray with hairspray to hold it in place. Repeat these steps with the hair on the right side of your head to create an identical victory roll.

    Hair Pomp

    • 5

Go for this 1940's hairstyle where your hair is piled high on the forehead. Grab your front top section of hair, the section of hair that directly about your forehead, and comb it out. Hold it with one hand and back comb it, running the comb from ends to roots to give it some volume.

    • 6

Comb this section of hair once more from roots to ends to smooth it out. Hold this section of hair flat against the middle and back part of your scalp. Twist the middle part of this section of hair.

    • 7

Holding that slightly twisted portion, push this section of hair forward, creating a pomp. Pin either side of it, using at least two hair pins or more, if your hair is thick.

    • 8

Comb out a small section of hair above your right ear and twist it. Pull it back and pin it to one side of where you just pinned your pomp. Repeat with the other side. Spray the entire style when finished.
