Glamour Lighting Tutorial

Glamour Lighting Tutorial thumbnail
Use glamor lighting when photographing models to emphasize their features.

One of the key components to a beautiful photo is the lighting. In a studio setting, a photographer has complete control over the light he wants to create. The more creative you are in setting the proper mood with your lighting, the greater the impact your photos will have. Glamour lighting is a dramatic lighting technique designed to emphasize the model.

Things You'll Need

  • Solid backdrop of a dark color
  • Four studio lights with adjustable power settings
  • Camera
  • Tripod
  • Model
  • Stool, bench, couch -- optional.

  1. How to Set up Glamor Lighting

    • 1

Position your model in accordance with your preference. The model can be standing, sitting or lounging. Ensure it is reasonably comfortable so you have enough time to take the perfect picture.

    • 2

Line up your key/main light with your model's nose, then raise the light until a small shadow starts to appear under the nose. The light should be the brightest on the set, as you do not want to diffuse it. It should appear as a spotlight on your model.

    • 3

Place the primary fill light on the opposite side of the model to the key light. To create dramatic shadows, reduce the power of the fill light. Normal lighting calls for the primary fill light to be half the power of the key light. Reduce this setting to one quarter of the key light.

    • 4

Position the top/hair fill light at a very high angle to highlight the shape of the models head and hair. This light will be brighter than the primary fill light, but weaker than the key light.

    • 5

Place the fourth light behind the model and direct towards her. This light should almost be as bright as the key light. This will make the model stand out against the background, by creating a halo or rim of intense light around the model.

Tips & Warnings

  • For a different effect, try using diffusers or colored gels on your lights to create different effects.
