How to Clean Vintage Formica Kitchen Cabinets

Formica is a plastic laminate material that contains melamine. Today, Formica is primarily used for kitchen and bathroom countertops, but in the 1950s through 1970s, Formica was also used to create kitchen cabinets and tabletops. Formica cabinets should be cleaned as needed to remove food and dust. Formica is fairly simple to clean, and can be cleaned using household ingredients or household cleaning products.

Things You'll Need

• Bowl
• Baking soda
• Sponge
• Cloth
• Window cleaner

Instructions

Baking Soda

1. Combine 1 tablespoon of baking soda with 2 cups of warm water in a bowl.

2. Dip a sponge or cloth in the mixture. Rub the mixture into the Formica kitchen cabinets. Allow the mixture to sit on the cabinets for five minutes.

3. Use a damp cloth to wipe the mixture off of the cabinets.

Window Cleaner

1. Spray a small amount of window cleaner on a soft cloth.

2. Rub the damp cloth on the kitchen cabinet to clean it. Spray the cloth as needed to keep it damp.

3. Wipe down the cabinets with a water-dampened cloth to remove any remaining glass cleaner residue.
