Estates and trusts are required to file tax Form 1041 each tax year. This form is a 1-page form that shows the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) the amount of tax owed by an estate or a trust for the current tax year. The IRS requires that Form 1041 be filed on or before April 15.

      Obtain Form 1041 from the IRS website (see Resources). Print a copy of the form to fill out.

      Enter your tax information onto Form 1041. The first section requires your personal information, such as your name, address and federal tax identification number. The following three sections require your income, deductions and tax/payment information. The instruction booklet for Form 1041 gives line-by-line instructions for Form 1041, which makes filling it out more understandable and easier (see Resources).

      Review the information you have written to ensure no mistakes have been entered onto Form 1041. Sign and date the bottom of the form.

      Find the address of the Internal Revenue Service location to which you are required to mail your return. This information is located on the instructions. The mailing address for Form 1041 is determined by the state in which you live.
