Instructions

  1. Preparation

    • 1

Cover any upholstery on your rocking chair with newspaper. Secure the paper with masking tape, being careful to completely protect the fabric from spills or seeping whitewash.

    • 2

Sand the entire rocking chair with a fine grit sandpaper. Apply gentle pressure when sanding to give the wood a light "tooth" to help your whitewash product adhere to the wood.

    • 3

Wipe the entire chair with a tack cloth, making certain the surface is clean and dust-free. Place the rocking chair on a clean drop cloth.

    Whitewashing

    • 4

Dilute white or off-white flat latex paint with water if using paint. Pour approximately two cups of paint and one cup of water into a bucket and mix well. Adjust this formula to your preference. A thinner mixture will create a sheerer finish while a thicker one will be more opaque. Do not dilute whitewashing stain.

    • 5

Apply the paint mixture or stain to the rocking chair one section at a time with your brush, roller or sponge. Wipe the whitewash off with a clean rag, slightly rubbing as you wipe. Control the depth of the effect by how much whitewash you remove or leave on. Repeat the process on the other sections of the chair after you are satisfied with your technique. Allow the rocking chair to dry thoroughly.

    • 6

Apply a sealant, such as a water-based varnish, to the chair according to the manufacturer's directions.

Tips & Warnings

  • Cal Finder suggests using products labeled as "whitewashing stains" on furniture made from pine and "pickling stains" on oak.
