How to Train a Puppy With a Big Dog in the House

Puppies are easily distracted, making training a challenge.

Bringing home a new puppy is an exciting occasion, and the novelty of a new pet, as well as the cuteness of the puppy, can provide hours of entertainment. Your existing dog might not think so, however. The new puppy will probably pester your big dog by nipping, pouncing and being generally puppy-like. Training can be a challenge for any new puppy, especially if there are distractions like a big dog in the house.

Instructions

1. Introduce your new puppy to your big dog in a neutral place, such as a park or sidewalk. Keep them on leashes and be prepared in case either dog shows aggression or extreme fear. Allow the puppy and the big dog to sniff each other to get used to the other's scent. Take the puppy home only when the big dog accepts it.

2. Provide equal attention to your new puppy and your big dog to prevent jealousy or resentment. Give both the puppy and the big dog treats and praise for behaving well around each other. Ignoring the big dog and lavishing attention on the puppy might create attention-seeking behavior in the big dog, which is a distraction to the puppy during training.

3. Take your puppy to a puppy obedience class at your local veterinarian's office, pet store or humane society. A puppy obedience class teaches the puppy to pay attention in the face of any distractions, which may come in handy at home around your big dog.

4. Practice obedience at home. Have a friend or family member take the big dog out for a walk, or let it outside if you have a fenced yard. This eliminates the probability of the big dog distracting the puppy during training.

5. Include your big dog in your puppy's training sessions if they get along and can work together.

Tips & Warnings

• If your dog or puppy does not want to work for treats, experiment with other rewards such as toys, praise or play time.

• Do not leave your puppy and big dog alone together until the puppy is bigger and you can trust them to behave and not to fight.
