How to Make Adjustable Garage Shelving Out of Wood
For some people, the garage is the ultimate "catch all" for storage. Over time, this can lead to a crowded and messy space. Adding shelves to your garage will help you keep the clutter organized. If you go one step further and make a shelving system that's adjustable, you can improve on the concept. - 6 1x10 boards, 6 feet long
- Tape measure
- Drill with 1/4-inch bit
- Circular saw
- Sheet of 1/2-inch plywood
- 1/4-inch dowel rod, 2 feet long
- Hammer
- Finish nails
- Sandpaper

Lay two 1x10 boards onto a set of saw horses. Stretch a tape measure the length of a board and make a mark every inch on a line 1 inch in from the edge of board. Do this on the other edge as well. When you've completed marking the board, you'll have two lines of marks extending the length of the board, each line 1 inch in from the sides. Mark both boards.

Drill a hole using a drill and 1/4-inch bit into both boards at each of the marks. Drill completely through the wood when making the holes.

Cut each of the remaining 1x10 boards in half, so that you have eight 3-foot boards.

Assemble a box using the two 6-foot boards and two of the 3-foot boards. Allow the 6-foot boards to overlap the ends of the 3-foot boards. Nail the pieces together with a hammer and finishing nails, spaced every three inches.

Cut a rectangular piece of plywood with your circular saw, measuring 6 feet by 3 feet and 2 inches. Place this onto the box from Step 4 and nail it in place with hammer and nails.

Cut the 2-foot dowel rod with your saw into 2-inch pieces.

Sit the box upright so that it is standing on the 3-foot side. Place it in the location you've chosen.

Slide pieces of dowel into the holes on the sides of the shelving unit at the height you want your shelves. Place the shelves onto the dowels for support. You can adjust the height of the shelves by moving the dowels.
