How to Train With Nunchuks

How to Train With Nunchuks thumbnail
Flipping over the shoulder is a basic nunchuks technique.

The nunchaku, commonly referred to as nunchuks, is a traditional martial arts weapon with roots in China and Japan. Nunchuks are basically two short sticks connected by a rope or chain. The sticks on this weapon can be made of wood or metal, but it is recommended that beginners practice with foam-padded nunchuks. A good way to improve your nunchaku skills is to practice a basic routine that allows you to practice spins, strikes and catches.

Instructions

    • 1

Grab the nunchuks with your right hand. Hold the top of one stick near the rope. Practice spinning the other stick around clockwise and counterclockwise. Use your wrist to spin the nunchuks. Do not use your whole arm. Spin the nunchuks in front of you and at your sides.

    • 2

Flip one stick up under your right arm. Catch the nunchuks with your armpit. Use your wrist to flick the nunchuks out in front of you as if you are striking an attacker's face. Recapture the nunchuks under your arm after striking.

    • 3

Flip the nunchuks over your right shoulder. Bring your left arm across the front of your body. Use your left hand to catch the side of the nunchuks that goes over your shoulder. Place your left hand under your right armpit and lead the nunchuks into your hand. Practice flipping the nunchuks back and forth over your shoulder.

    • 4

After catching the nunchuks with your left hand, let go with your right hand. Swing the weapon from right to left across the front of your body. Swing the nunchuks as if you are striking sideways at an attacker.

    • 5

Use your left hand to swing the nunchuks around your left side and then behind your back. Catch one side of the nunchuks behind your back with your right hand. Let go with your left hand and continue the momentum of the nunchuks. Use your right hand to let the weapon strike horizontally across the front of yourself.

    • 6

Let the rope touch the left side of your body as you swing the nunchuks. Bounce the weapon off your left side and reverse the direction of the weapon. Bring the nunchuks around your right side and behind your back once again. Transfer the nunchuks into your left hand behind your back.

    • 7

Use your left hand to flip the nunchuks over your left shoulder. Catch the other end with your right hand under your armpit. Let go with your left hand. Swing the nunchuks across the front of your body at an angle going up and to the right.

    • 8

Flip the nunchuks over your right shoulder and catch under your armpit with your left hand. Let go with your left hand again. Use your right hand to flip the nunchuks forward over your shoulder and catch one end with your armpit. Strike out in front of yourself again and repeat this routine.

Tips & Warnings

  • Try starting this routine with your left hand to become proficient with both hands. Speed up the routine as you become better at it. Watch yourself in a mirror or videotape yourself to critique your techniques.
