How to Become a Paramedic Driver
Becoming a paramedic will take some determination, and can prove to be a difficult road to travel. But it is a very rewarding career, and most practicing paramedics are in their profession because they enjoy the adrenaline rush, and they enjoy helping people. Another perk of the job is becoming an ambulance driver, the paramedic responsible for rushing critical patients to the hospital and increasing their chances of survival.

Experience is a valuable asset for a paramedic. Become a certified Paramedic. While becoming a Paramedic is not a prerequisite to becoming an ambulance driver, it is highly recommended to have experience in the field before becoming a driver. This includes first becoming certified as an EMT-B (EMT Basic), and then completing Paramedic training.

Practice safe driving techniques both in the ambulance and in your car. In most states, all that is required is that ambulance drivers maintain a clean driving record. Some states require a special certificate.

A written application is required by some states to obtain proper certification. Determine what level of certification your state requires. You are required to obtain a special certificate (usually the Emergency Vehicle Operator certificate) if you live in Alabama, California, Delaware, Florida, Idaho, Maryland, New Mexico, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas or Virginia. Most other states do not require a special certification, but some require that a class be taken before operating an Ambulance.
