How to Repair or Replace a Broken Window Seal
Windows are an important component to achieving energy-efficiency in a home. The window seals prevent water seepage and drafts. If a seal becomes damaged, the heat can get out and cold air in, which can cause condensation or window fogging. Replacing the window seals--window glazing--can fix the problem when installing new glass. It will take a few tools to finish this project. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Putty knife
- Window glass
- Glazing (caulk-like) compound in tube
- Caulking gun
- Scissors

Scrape off the old putty and seal from inside of the window frame, where the window frame attaches to the glass, with a putty knife.

Fill the caulking gun and cut off the tip of the caulk tube with scissors.

Run a thin line of window-glazing caulk around the outside perimeter of the window pane.

Install new window glass if the old glass was water damaged from the broken seal. Push the new glass into the glazing.

Add caulk into the space where the glass and window frame meet. Fill in the crack with a putty knife.

Repeat the above steps to seal the inside of the window.

Tips & Warnings
If you are replacing the glass, make sure you purchase the same size and type of glass that was originally installed. This will make the process easier. If you have an older home, this may not be possible and you may need to enlist the help of a professional.
Always wear protective eye wear and gloves when working with glass.
