It is important to measure correctly before installing new carpet.

The first step to installing new carpet in any room of your home is to find out just how much carpet you will need to complete the job. While the task may seem daunting and may make you want to hire a carpet company to come to the house and measure the space for you, by measuring for new carpet on your own, you can save a large amount of money. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Use the ruler to measure the length and width of the room you are carpeting. If you are adding new carpet to more than one room, keep the measurements separate for each room you are carpeting in order to make the process less confusing.

    • 2

Multiply the two numbers together and divide that amount by the number 9. For example, if a room is 14 feet by 12 feet, multiply them together to get 168. Divide that number by 9 to get 18.66. This is the square yardage of the room you are carpeting. You may also want to consult a yardage chart (see the Resources) if you are unsure of your measurements.

    • 3

Add 10 percent to your calculation in Step 2 in order to account for any problems or irregularities in your room. For example, take 18.66 and multiply it by .10 to get 1.866. Then add 1.866 to 18.66 to get 20.526. This is the amount of carpet you will need to purchase for a 14-foot by 12-foot room.

Tips & Warnings

  • Be very careful when measuring for new carpet, as mistakes in your calculations can lead to you purchasing the incorrect amount of materials.
