Changing careers is always a difficult decision and requires some understanding of the new field you'll be going into. The computer field is a large one and most people understand that computers are the way of the future. Computer technician, however, is at the bottom of the food chain in the computer industry. This makes a computer tech a good entry-level job, although this has become a very competitive field with low starting salaries.

Use your current position to get ready for a computer technician job. Ask your company's computer technician where he or she learned what they know. Attempt to resolve your own computer problems. As you learn, offer to help fix other people's computer issues. Find out if your employer will pay for you to take any computer training classes.

Build a computer. Building your own computer provides fundamental computer technician experience. This task will involve all of the basic hardware knowledge you need as well as provide troubleshooting opportunities. Purchase all of the hardware pieces such as your motherboard, processor, memory, hard drive, optical drive, computer case and audio and video cards from a computer retailer. Get a good guide on how to build a computer and follow it step by step.

Find out what employers are looking for in a computer technician. Applying at a variety of places is more likely to yield interviews. Even if you can't get an interview without experience, ask the employer over the phone what they are looking for besides previous work experience. Include all your computer-relevant knowledge in your resume. You may have to be creative. Be sure to apply what you learned from perspective employers, such as including details about your mechanical aptitude.
