How to Find a Purchasing Agent
When you want to buy a home, choosing the right purchasing agent can be critical. Purchasing agents, who are also known as buyers' agents, can guide you toward choosing a home that is a good fit for you. A well-trained agent also should be able to educate you and protect your interests during the legal exchange of making a home purchase. In the case of this kind of major financial purchase, you need to choose your purchasing agent wisely.

1
Look for real estate agencies in the area in which you are going to buy a home. These agents should know the area better than someone working from outside the area. You can find a list of real estate agencies by area in the online yellow pages (see the Resources section).
-
2
Arrange interviews with agents in the area in which you plan to buy.
-
-
3
Ask for the agent's experience, such as total years in the real estate business and the number of sales participated in during the previous year.
-
4
Discuss the agent's experience as a purchasing agent versus as a seller's agent. You may want to opt for someone who exclusively works as a purchasing agent or at least works more with buyers than with sellers.
-
5
Ask for a list of professional certifications and licenses, along with references from individuals.
-
6
Discuss the agent's role in the buying process. Determine if he will be at the closing and if he will arrange the necessary inspections or appraisals. Remember that your agent will receive a percentage of the house's sale price, so don't feel guilty about knowing what services you are paying for.
-
7
Check to see how flexible his schedule is as far as showing you homes that you are interested in.
-
8
Look for professionalism and tact. If someone is going to represent you in the purchasing process, you want her to handle herself well.
