How to Obtain a Work Visa Inside of Canada thumbnail
To apply for a work permit in Canada, ensure that your application is accurate and complete.

Most of the people who apply for a work permit valid in Canada do so from outside that country, according to Citizenship and Immigration Canada. If you wish to apply for a work permit while you are already in Canada, you must meet certain eligibility requirements. You must also have a job lined up with a Canadian employer. An immigration official may require that you prove you are not a threat to Canadian security. If you meet the requirements, you may apply for a work permit online.

Meet the eligibility requirements to apply from inside Canada. You may apply in this manner if you already have a study or work permit (and wish to renew it), or if your parents or spouse have a permit. Or, you may apply if you have a temporary resident permit. It must be valid for at least six months. You may also apply if you have begun the process to be a permanent resident of Canada. Or, you may apply for a work permit for a different job, if you already have one for another job.

Gather the necessary documentation. You must have a written notice of a job offer. Your future employer must be Canadian. You must also have a written notice from the Human Resources and Skills Development Canada (HRSDC) that allows your future employer to hire a non-Canadian. Your potential employer should provide this for you.

Register for an epass issued by the Canadian government. This enables you to access MyCIC (Citizenship and Immigration Canada), an online service that allows you to apply for a work permit online. Go to the website of the Citizenship and Immigration Canada and click on "Register for an epass." Follow the on-screen directions to create your user ID and password and fill out the security questions and answers.

Fill out the application. Enter your name, any aliases, citizenship, passport number, which country you were a permanent resident in last, your languages, contact information and family member information.

    • 5

Explain why you wish to remain in Canada on your application. Detail your sources of income and assure immigration officials that you have the means to support yourself, other family members and to pay for transportation out of Canada later. Detail your criminal record, if applicable, and that of your family members. Pay the processing fee, which will vary, depending on your status. It is payable via credit card.

Wait for written notice of your application status to arrive in the mail. This letter may instruct you to complete other application steps. For example, you may need to meet with an immigration official to assure him that you are going to leave Canada when your permit expires. You may also need to have a medical exam to show that you are in good health. Follow all of these additional steps, if necessary, to receive your work permit.
