How to Give Your Baby a Latin Name

1. Choose a happy, positive name for your child. For a girl, Allegra means happy and Lucy means bringer of light. For a boy, Orleans means golden, Ardell means eager and Carmine means song.

2. Decide on a strong name. For girls, Martina and Marcella mean warlike - the male version being Martin. Mars means bold warrior.

3. Select a heavenly name. For a girl, Celeste means heavenly, Bente and Benedicta mean blessed, and Baptista means baptizer. For boys, Bennett means little blessed one, and Dominic means "belonging to the Lord."

4. Opt for a name that symbolizes love and kindness. For girls, Amy means beloved, Charity means kindness and Clementine means merciful. For boys, choose Clement.

5. Choose a name synonymous with beauty. Bella means beautiful and Terrence means smooth.

6. Name your son Cato for wisdom, Herman for nobility or Francis for freedom.

7. Name your daughter Andrea for femininity, Concordia for harmony or Deana for divinity.

on 3/7/2006 Latin is not the root of English. This is a common misconception. Latin is a Romance language, whilst English is East Germanic. They both stem from a common ancestor known as Proto-Indo-European.

on 11/22/2005 Herman is not a Latin name, it's German.
For nobility (aristocratic class) derive a name from "Patrician" i.e. Patrick. Alternatively derive from "nobilis" which just gets you back to the English word "Noble"

on 11/22/2005 Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, more famously known as Lewis Carroll, selected his pen name using the same ingenuity as his greatest work, "Alice In Wonderland." By reverting his name Charles Lutwidge to Latin (Carolus Ludovicus) then, reversing them and putting it back into English, he came up with Lewis Carroll. Try it yourself and see if you like it!
