How to Use PTFE Thread Seal Tape

Piping systems are an important part of almost all homes buildings that use plumbing, gas and other utilities. Pipes constructed of metal or PVC plastic are intended to withstand extreme temperatures and changes in pressure. For this reason, the pipe threads require sealing in order to reinforce the system and ensure proper function. PTFE tape is one of the most effective and commonly used methods of providing an airtight seal.

Instructions

1. Choose a roll of PTFE pipe tape with 3to 4 mm thickness and a density of 1g per cubic centimeter (CC). CCs are equivalent to milliliters. These are the ideal parameters for providing the most effective seal for pipe threads.

2. Wrap the tape tightly around the male pipe thread. Only apply one complete rotation in the direction of the thread spiral.

3. Tear the used tape from the rest of the roll, and draw the loose end tightly around the threads to ensure that the free end does not overhang. This will prevent fitment issues later on.

4. Use your fingernails to press the PTFE tape firmly at the overlapping points. The tape should conform to the threaded surface.

5. Assemble the male and female pipes to check for proper fitment. PTFE tape is applicable on both PVC plastic pipe threads and galvanized metal piping.
