How to Add Transmission Fluid to Ford Cars

Adding transmission fluid to a Ford car can be done when the transmission fluid level is low or after the fluid has been drained from the vehicle. A Ford car can come with a transmission that is standard or automatic. The transmission fluid needs to be flushed or changed just like the motor oil. Pull the hood release that is under the dash on the driver's side of the vehicle.

Set the support bar to keep the hood open.

Locate the dip stick for the transmission fluid reservoir that is at the rear of the engine.

Pull out the dip stick and wipe it off with a rag. Look on the dip stick to see if the type of transmission fluid to add is stamped anywhere.

Insert a funnel into the transmission fluid dip stick tube.

Pour the transmission fluid into the funnel to fill the reservoir.

Remove the funnel and insert the dip stick to check the fluid level.

Stop adding transmission fluid when the full line on the dip stick has been reached.

Replace the dip stick and then close the hood to complete the project.

 How do I Add Transmission Fluid to a 2001 Ford F150 Automatic?

Drive your truck at least 20 miles to warm up the transmission fluid to get an accurate reading. Place the transmission in “PARK” and leave the engine running. Set the parking brake.

Open the hood. Locate the automatic transmission dipstick at the rear of the engine bay on the passenger side. Pull the dipstick from the dipstick tube. Wipe the end of the dipstick clean with a rag. Push the dipstick back into the tube until it is fully seated. Remove the dipstick and observe the transmission fluid level. Check the markings at the end of the dipstick to determine how much fluid is needed. Wipe the dipstick clean and place it aside.

Place a funnel designed for adding transmission fluid into the dipstick tube where the dipstick was removed. Make sure the end of the funnel is fully seated in the tube before adding fluid.

Add Motorcraft MERCON V automatic transmission fluid (or equivalent) into the funnel in ½ pint increments. Remove the funnel and insert the dipstick. Remove the dipstick and check the transmission fluid level. Continue this procedure until the transmission fluid is at the full mark. Do not overfill the transmission or it could be damaged.

Remove the funnel and replace the dipstick. Close the hood.

 How to Add Transmission Fluid to a 1999 Taurus

Park the car on level ground. Allow your engine to run for 10 minutes.

Open the hood.

Pull the dipstick out of the fluid well, located right beneath the engine. Wipe it clean with a rag or paper towel.

Stick the dipstick back into the fluid well. Let it sit in the well for 15 seconds. Pull it back out. Read the results. If the fluid level is between the two lines on the dipstick, no action is required. If more fluid is needed, proceed to Step 5.

Place the funnel at the tip of the fluid well. Pour in a portion of transmission fluid. Check the fluid level on the dipstick again. Continue to add transmission fluid until the fluid level registers between the two lines on the dipstick.

Drive the truck about 20 miles, then park it on a level surface. Set the parking brake. Depress the brake pedal, then move the gearshift into each gear in turn. Put the gearshift into "Park." Leave the engine running.

Open the hood and locate the transmission dipstick on the passenger's side of the engine compartment either to the right of the battery or forward of the firewall.

Grasp the dipstick and pull it out of the dipstick tube. Wipe the dipstick with a clean rag, then re-insert it into the tube. Press the dipstick into the tube until it is fully seated, then pull the stick out again.

Observe the end of the dipstick and note the level of fluid in the transmission. Add transmission fluid only if the level indicates it is low. The "Add" mark is either written on the stick or it is designated by the small hole in the stick closest to the tip.

Insert the end of the funnel into the dipstick tube. Add 1/2 pint of transmission fluid. Remove the funnel from the dipstick tube.

Depress the brake pedal, then move the gearshift into each gear in turn. Put the gearshift into "Park." Leave the engine running. Recheck the fluid level with the dipstick.

Repeat Steps 3 through 6 until the fluid level is above the "Add" mark on the dipstick.

 How to Add Transmission Fluid on the Expedition

Park the vehicle on a level surface and put on the parking brake.

Place your foot on the brake (parking brake should still be engaged) and start the engine.

Move gearshift through all the gears, allowing time for each gear to engage.

Place gearshift in park, and leave the engine running.

Remove the dipstick from the transmission filler tube. Refer to the "Identifying Components in the Engine Compartment" section in the "Maintenance and Specifications" chapter of your Expedition's owner's guide to locate the dipstick.

Wipe the dipstick clean using a clean, dry, lint-free rag.

Replace the dipstick back in the filler tube, and push it in completely.

Remove the dipstick again, and read the fluid level. The fluid level should be in the designated area marked "hot" on the dipstick if the vehicle is at normal operating temperature. If the vehicle is not at normal operating temperature, the fluid level should read in the area marked "ambient." If the fluid level is low (indicated by the "add" area of the dipstick), do not drive the vehicle.

Refer to the "Lubricant Specifications" section of the "Maintenance and Specification" chapter of your owner's guide to determine the correct type of fluid to add to the transmission. The correct type of fluid may also be indicated on the vehicle's dipstick.

Add fluid in 1-cup increments through the filler tube, using the measuring cup and funnel, until the fluid level is correct.
