How to Become a Realtor in Louisiana
A Realtor's job is to assist clients in the process of buying and selling real estate, whether that be land, a house, a condo or a commercial property. A Realtor is different from a real estate agent in that Realtors pay an annual fee to be a member of the National Association of Realtors. Realtors are bound by the Association's Code of Ethics. The steps below will detail how to become a real estate agent, and how to apply to be a Realtor.

1
Ensure you meet the requirements to become a real estate agent. You must be 18 years of age or older at the time of application. You must also have a high school diploma or equivalent. If you have any prior criminal record, a background check will be required and approval from the Real Estate Commission must be attained before being allowed to take the real estate licensing exam.
-
2
Complete 90 hours of real estate education in courses approved by the Louisiana Real Estate Commission. There are many places to take these courses. A search in your phone book can direct you to a local real estate school. You may also check with a local community college, an online real estate school or local real estate brokers or agencies. They often offer training for the real estate exams. Note that there will be varying fees for all agencies and you may be required to sign an agreement to work for them once you are licensed.

3
Complete the Louisiana real estate salesperson licensing exam upon completion of your training.
-
4
Find a licensed real estate broker who is willing to sponsor you. You also must have obtained proof that you acquired "errors and omissions" insurance before being issued a license.
-
5
Join a local Realtor board or association once you have your license. You will have to pay fees to become a Realtor. For example, if you live in Baton Rouge and you have your real estate license, you may pay fees to join the Greater Baton Rouge Association of Realtors. You also automatically become a member of the Louisiana Realtors and the National Association of Realtors.
