How to Cancel the Warranty on a Car You Sold
You can cancel your vehicle's exended warranty after you sell your car. You might also find that you can get some of your money back. Original manufacturer warranties cannot be cancelled. You are only able to cancel an extended warranty that you bought as an aftermarket item. Cancelling your warranty should only take a few minutes of your time, just as long as you have your information in order.

1
Gather all warranty information. Find your original warranty contract. If you can't find it, locate the original selling dealership for your warranty contact information if you bought from a dealer. Locate the phone number of the warranty company--you can find the phone number online.
-
2
Gather information such as account number, date of purchase, vehicle identification number, year make and model of the vehicle that you are cancelling the warranty on. You should note your mileage before the sale if you are trying to receive money back.
-
-
3
Contact the warranty company and let the representative know that you wish to cancel your contract and provide all necessary information. Explain that you sold your vehicle and no longer need the extra coverage. The representative will offer to send you the cancellation paperwork or direct you to the dealer who originally sold it to you, if applicable.
-
4
Ask the representative if emailing or faxing cancellation documents are an option. Discuss any refund payments with the warranty representative and ask how much you will receive back and when you can hope to receive it. Print out all documents to sign.
-
5
Fill out your paperwork in full, listing your name, address and all relevant vehicle information. The dealership will handle the warranty cancellation if you're cancelling at the dealer. Make sure you receive a copy of the cancellation document for your own records.
-
6
Send the documents back immediately if mailing or faxing the paperwork. If you are due a refund, it should arrive within a few weeks.

Tips & Warnings
Consider transferring your warranty with the sale of your car and selling it to the new owner rather than cancel it. Transferring a warranty is optional.
If you bought your extended warranty from a dealership, the dealer can cancel the contract. The dealer has all necessary warranty cancellation paperwork for you to sign. Or, you can deal with the warranty company directly.
If you financed the extended warranty when you purchased your vehicle and still owe money on the car sale, your refund might go to the bank. The bank bought the extended warranty, as you financed it.
