Instructions for Making Coffee Mug Mats
Enjoy the aroma of cinnamon as you rest your coffee or cocoa mug on a handmade mug mat. Making coffee mug mats is a simple project that can be done with inexpensive recycled materials. Mug mats resemble glass coasters used for cold drinks, except they are slightly larger to accommodate a coffee mug. When treated with essential oils the heat of the beverage will produce a soothing and relaxing scent. Make several mug mats to keep on hand as last-minute holiday gifts for the mail carrier, paperboy or other service people in your daily life.

1
Cut two, 6-inch squares from an old pair of blue jeans and one, 5-inch square of quilt batting.
-
2
Place the two blue jean squares together with the wrong sides facing. Match and pin the edges.
-
-
3
Sew around three sides of the mug mat using a 1/2-inch seam allowance. Slip the batting into the mug mat through the opening. Pin the opening closed and sew using a 1/2-inch seam allowance.
-
4
Top stitch an "X" across the surface of the mug mat, sewing from one corner across to an opposite corner. This will hold the batting in place to prevent shifting.
-
5
Toss the mug mat in the washer and dryer to fray the edges.
-
6
Lay the mug mat with the desired top side facing up. Apply acrylic paint to a chunky stamp using a make-up sponge. Stamp the center top of the mug mat. Allow the paint to dry.
