How to Make Custom Orthotics

How to Make Custom Orthotics thumbnail
Custom orthotics can better contour to your feet.

Over-the-counter orthotics can be inefficient when trying to conform to your individual foot. Sometimes, making a custom orthotic is a viable and healthier option. Orthotics can be costly, uncomfortable and cumbersome. With so many different styles and features it may be hard to find one that contours to your foot. In making a custom orthotic for yourself or someone else you are ensuring that the device is going to work properly and provide the support that person requires.

Instructions

    • 1

Be seated so that your knee is at a 90-degree angle. Place a thin piece of cardboard (a file folder is sufficient) under your foot.

    • 2

Trace an outline of your foot using a marker. Be sure to mark where the ball and heel of your foot contact the paper.

    • 3

Remove your foot from the paper. Place a small amount of caulk in the arch area of the outline. Use your finger to spread the caulk around the whole arch area.

    • 4

Place plastic food wrap over the caulk. Place your foot back over the outline. Press down hard on the heel, ball and edges of your feet to ensure the caulk distributes evenly.

    • 5

Remove your foot and allow the caulk to cure for 48 hours. Remove the plastic food wrap and cut the paper down to the exact contours of your foot.

Tips & Warnings

  • When setting the caulk with your foot, you can stand to create a thinner sole and arch.
