How to Make LEGO Scenery

How to Make LEGO Scenery thumbnail
Your minifigs need a whole LEGO world, not just a house.

Maker of the "Toy of the Century" according to "Fortune" magazine in 2000, the LEGO Group makes 15 billion of the colored bricks a year. While there are over 4,720 different LEGO sets that can build anything from Harry Potter's Hogwarts Castle to a three-story grocery store, the sets don't include much, if any, scenery. The key to turning your LEGO creation into a neighborhood, country or galaxy far, far away is to add your own scenery in the form of trees, flowers, roads and hills. LEGO building accessories are sold separately at online retail and hobby stores.

Instructions

    • 1

Look online at LEGO enthusiast sites and LEGO's official website for inspiration, ideas and LEGO accessories you might never have seen before.

    • 2

Get a large LEGO base plate to lay the foundation of your scenery. Base plates are available in green, blue, gray, black and tan. Some base plates have water markings, some have roads and some have airport runways.

    • 3

Create three-dimensional features on your base plate using colored LEGO bricks; for instance, small hills that you can add shrubbery to, platforms for LEGO structures to sit on, or rock clusters.

    • 4

Use blue LEGOs to create water features, including ponds, lakes, rivers, fountains or moats. Use neutral or green-colored LEGOs along the sides to create banks.

    • 5

Place LEGO trees and plants around the base plate and around your LEGO structure; the more the better. There are a variety of LEGO flora including palm trees, pine trees, Christmas trees, bushes, jungle leaves, vines, ferns and flowers.

    • 6

Use LEGO animals and minifigures to complete your scene. Arrange minifigures in action poses, such as a man catching fish or a woman picking flowers.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can purchase large lots of LEGOs inexpensively at garage sales, resale shops and online auctions. Vintage and hard-to-find LEGOs will add an extra dimension to your scenery.
