How to Determine the Best Career Suited for You
According to a 2010 report by the Conference Board, more than 50 percent of working Americans were unhappy or not satisfied with their current job. While a portion of these statistics are attributed to supervisor and coworker problems, the remainder are unhappy as a result of being in the wrong profession. If you think you may be one of these individuals employed in the wrong career field, it's important to learn how to determine the best career for you.

1
Conduct a skills inventory. List your strengths or use a skill inventory form from the Arizona State University website to assist you in determining what your skills and strengths are, as well as what career opportunities exist.
-
2
Complete a career assessment. Use a career assessment software program such as Discover to learn what career fields are a good match for you based on your interest and skills. Explore the job opportunities available under career fields that matched your interest and skills.

3
Meet with a career counselor. Discuss your career interests and aspirations with a counselor trained in helping individuals find the career best suited for them. Use their help to sort through careers and job fields, to find the ideal career. Make a plan for how to obtain a position in the career field best suited for you, and discuss any concerns or problems you've had in the workplace and how you can handle them in the future if they arise again, such as dealing with a difficult boss or co-worker.

4
Shadow jobs. Narrow the list of careers to two or three that match your interest and skills. Use networking to find people currently employed in these fields who will let you shadow them. Spend time seeing and learning what a typical day is like in their career field, and use the information to determine what career is best suited for you.
