Residents in the state of Alabama must obtain an insurance license in order to earn commissions by selling insurance policies. It is one of the few states that do not require its insurance candidates to submit to fingerprinting, Alabama has a straight-forward process for obtaining an insurance license. Because the Alabama Department of Insurance wants to insure its agents are knowledgeable, you must take pre-licensing courses before you can take the insurance exam to get your license.

      Satisfy the age and residency requirements. You must be at least 18 years of age, live in the state of Alabama and be a United States citizen or a legal alien.

      Determine which type of insurance license you want. Alabama offers several different licenses which include but are not limited to Life, Accident & Health, Property & Casualty, Personal lines and more. You must decide beforehand which type of license you want before beginning the licensing process.

      Obtain the necessary pre-licensing education. The pre-licensing education requirements vary depending on the type of license you are trying to obtain. For example, Life licenses require 20 pre-licensing education course hours while Property and Casualty require 40 hours. Visit the Alabama Department of Insurance website to find out the pre-licensing education requirements for each license type. They also provide a list of approved pre-licensing providers from which to take the necessary courses.

      Download the Producer Examination Content Outline. The Alabama Department of Insurance provides an examination outline. The outline will give you a good indication of the types of questions that will appear on the state exam.

      Take the state exam. The licensing exams are given in five cities in Alabama: Birmingham, Huntsville, Mobile, Tuscaloosa and Montgomery. To take the exam at one of these locations you must complete the online registration form available on the University of Alabama College of Continuing Studies website. Be sure to schedule the exam at least seven days in advance.

      Complete the online insurance application available through the National Insurance Producer Registry (NIPR). After successfully passing the state exam, you must file the online application and submit it with the processing fee of $60. In addition, you must send a copy of your course completion certificate to the Department of Insurance. Upon receiving all of the required information, the state will issue your insurance license.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you hold a Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU), Certified Insurance Counselor (CIC) or Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU) designation, the pre-licensing course requirement is waived.
