How to Increase the Download Speed in BitTorrent
BitTorrent is a peer-to-peer file sharing client used frequently to share documents, music files, videos and much more. Since BitTorrent is an open source program, you can tweak its settings to enhance your download speed and make it more customized to your Internet connection. This process will require you to first test your connection speed in kilobits per second. This data will be essential in determining the specific changes you will need to make to improve your download speed.

Test your connection speed. "DSLReports" offers free tests. (see Resources). Click to choose a location that is nearest to where you live. Wait patiently as the flash program determines your download and upload speed. Note down the results in Kb/s on a piece of paper. You can also use other similar free services like "Abeltronica" and "Testmy.net."

Launch your BitTorrent client from the Start menu.

Click on "Options" and select "Speed Guide."

Click to select the "Maximum Download Speed" menu. Set a value that is close to 95% of your download speed you recorded in Step 1. So if your download speed recorded in Step 1 was 400 Kb/s, choose a value 380kB/s.

Disable Windows Firewall to further enhance your download speed. Click on Start and select "Control Panel." Double-click on "Windows Firewall." Click on the "Exceptions" tab and place a check mark next to your BiTorrent client. Hit "Apply."
