How to Paint Over Concrete Stain

Things You'll Need:

  • Trisodium phospate
  • Plastic bucket
  • Wire brush
  • Concrete cement
  • Trowel
  • Masking tape
  • Paint roller
  • Kilz primer
  • Oil-based paint
  • Sealant

Tip

Have the primer tinted to the color of your paint for easy application.

Create different patterns using different colored paints. Paint a stenciled design around the border of the concrete to give the illusion of an outdoor rug.

For larger spaces, paint different colors in each area to create the look of separate spaces.

Warnings:

  • When painting, always wear a protective mask to prevent fume inhalation.

Spruce up your concrete with a few coats of fresh paint. The look of stained concrete can appear dull over time, making for the perfect time to apply your favorite color paint for a bold and dramatic design. Painting concrete is very affordable and can be the perfect weekend project for your family. Consider painting bold stripes and designs for a one-of-a-kind creation. With a painting design and plan, you can transform the drab look of concrete into an inviting and attractive space.

Clean the stained concrete using TSP, or trisodium phosphate. Mix the TSP in a plastic bucket with water and scrub the concrete using a wire brush. Allow to dry thoroughly.

Fill cracks and holes in your stained concrete using cement filler. Smooth over holes with the trowel. Allow to dry at least 24 hours.

Tape off the stained concrete border with masking tape. Apply one coat of oil-based Kilz primer to the concrete. Let dry thoroughly.

Apply one or two coats of oil-based paint. Wipe down drips with a clean cloth. Allow to dry 24 hours.

Pull away masking tape. Apply one coat of clear sealant. This will protect the paint and prevent scratches and smudges. Allow to dry thoroughly.
