How to Buy a Business in Thailand

How to Buy a Business in Thailand thumbnail
Before buying a business in Thailand, be absolutely sure about the reputability of your broker.

The most difficult parts of buying a business in Thailand are knowing exactly what you are buying prior to your purchase and hiring an effective broker to navigate the legal and economic barriers to the purchase. Thus, buying a business in Thailand requires studying a particular industry in Thailand that you are interested in, acquiring information about the businesses available in that industry, and then hiring an accredited broker to help you navigate the legal and economic barriers (including getting a business license and visa) in Thailand.

Instructions

    • 1

Research information about the Thai industry that you are most interested in. For example, if you have visited Bangkok and decided that you wanted to open a bar, then be sure to research how to buy and run a bar, which includes a number of legal and economic issues (e.g. visa to operate a bar, labor costs and sales versus profits during the slow Thai economic period from roughly June through November). Only consider buying a business in a Thai industry that you know almost everything about.

Research the companies in that industry that are up for sale, and choose a business. The United States Department of Commerce website BuyUSA.gov also provides contact information for learning more about the Thai market and opportunities relevant to your interest. Select the business after completing as much market research as possible (i.e. be sure to contact the business owner or sales representative to get information about the current lease, owner, tax situation, inventory and location).

Select a broker to help you purchase the business. SunbeltAsia.com provides substantial contact information for acquiring a broker to purchase the Thai business; however, double-check on your own the legal requirements for operating a business in Thailand to make sure that the broker is taking care of all of the needed paperwork. The U.S. Department of Commerce website at USABuy.gov provides a listing of all of the legal requirements for a foreigner operating a business in Thailand. Once the broker helps you piece together a contract and all of your legal requirements for operating a business in Thailand have been completed, you will have purchased the Thai business.
