Knitting Directions for a Tube Scarf

Knit a scarf in a tube shape to avoid curled edges or border stitches.

If you want a scarf with the classic look of a knitted stockinette stitch, you usually have to knit some type of border in another stitch pattern onto the scarf in order to keep the edges from curling under. One way to avoid this problem is to knit a tube scarf; a tube scarf is knit in the round in stockinette stitch, thus creating a scarf that has the classic stockinette look without the curled edges. You will need an understanding of knitting in the round in order to knit a tube scarf.

Things You'll Need

• Worsted weight yarn
• Double pointed needles (DPNs) size US 8 (total of 4 needles)
• Scissors
• Large eye blunt needle

Instructions

1. Cast on a total of 60 stitches, leaving a 10-inch tail. To do this, cast on 15 stitches on each of four double-pointed needles (DPNs). Join to work in the round.

2. Work in stockinette stitch all the way around the circle. This means you will knit every stitch. In flat knitting, you have to purl every other row in order to make a stockinette pattern. When you knit in the round, however, you knit every row.

3. After a few inches of knitting, change to a new color of yarn if you want a striped scarf. You can change in even inch increments or make it random for a one-of-a-kind scarf creation.

4. Stop knitting when the scarf is as long as you want it to be. Cast off, leaving a 10-inch tail.

5. Flatten the short edges of the scarf and use a large eye blunt needle and the extra yarn tails you left during cast-on and cast-off to knit the edges flat together. This will seal the ends of your tube.

Tips & Warnings

• Add fringe to the ends of your scarf after sewing them shut if you want a fringed scarf.
