How to Get a Job With Little Experience

How to Get a Job With Little Experience thumbnail
Even new professionals or those with very little experience can find suitable employment.

Finding a job is never an easy task, and it can be even more challenging if you have very little professional experience. Many job seekers who don't have a lot of formal work experience lack confidence when applying for jobs or going to interviews. If this is how you enter an interview, the potential employer may pick up on your lack of confidence and never really consider you for the position. Getting a job when you have little experience involves being creative about the experience you have, preparing yourself for the long haul and being confident, even after you've been rejected.

Instructions

    • 1

Decide what types of jobs you want to apply for. Don't limit yourself to just one specific type of job in one industry. Be open to new experiences and new opportunities.

    • 2

Consider completing an unpaid internship. This can give you the benefit of formal work experience without having to convince an employer you're worth hiring. Approach companies in your area that offer positions in your field and ask about working as an intern for a period of time. If you do a good job, they may even hire you full-time once the internship ends.

    • 3

Do volunteer work. For job seekers with very little experience, volunteering can be a great way to gain job skills that can be used on a resume or discussed during an interview. When possible, gain experience that relates to your chosen field. For example, if you want to work as a graphic designer, offer to design promotional events for a fundraiser at your church.

    • 4

Create your resume. Include all experience you've had that has helped you gain job skills. This includes organizations you're an active member of, places where you volunteer, internships you've completed and any jobs you've had, including full and part-time work. After each item listed, include a few bullet points that explain the skills your acquired and responsibilities you had.

    • 5

Go into an interview with confidence. When you're asked to come in for an interview, be prepared to discuss your skills and talents. Know what you have to offer the company, and don't be afraid to use nontraditional experiences, such as volunteer work, when discussing your qualifications. If you're confident in your abilities and excited about the job, the employer will consider you as a candidate.
